International Symposium: Sustainable Land Use and Rural Development in Mountainous Regions of Southeast Asia

Hanoi, Vietnam
21-23 July 2010

The objective of the symposium is to bring together scholars and practitioners so that they can share innovative methods of studying upland devel-opment, present multidisciplinary and integrated re-search outcomes, and discuss successful policy meas-ures and development approaches which focus on balanced resource use, natural resource conservation and poverty reduction. 
The symposium will be structured along the following themes:
 
Integrating resource use and conservation

  • Nutrient cycling and erosion processes in mountainous agro-ecosystems with the emphasis on water and soil conservation
  • Studies on the fate and on-/ off-site effects of agrochemicals
  • Land evaluation and land suitability analysis to identify sustainable land use
  • Social interactions in multi-stakeholder networks with regard to the access to resources including aspects of cooperation and competition
  • Social empowerment, migration and integration of people in mountainous areas
  • Environmental valuation and payment for environmental services
  • Integrated modeling of mountainous watersheds to enhance the understanding of the complexity of mountainous systems
  • Conservation of local animal genetic resources through utilization

Innovation development

  • Animal husbandry systems, animal breeding programmes and aquaculture including pro-poor livestock approaches and food safety aspects
  • Innovations in horticultural production, fruit processing and water saving strategies
  • Marketing strategies and high-value production

Innovation adoption, acceptance and impact

  • Impact of technical, institutional and policy innovations on livelihoods
  • Poverty research and poverty assessment tools, microfinance and land tenure
  • Participatory approaches to knowledge generation and extension delivery
  • Action research, analysis of innovation systems and processes
