Towards sustainable natural resources management through environmental services schemes that are fair and efficient

The Forestry Service of West Sumatra province, Andalas University and the World Agroforestry Centre’s (ICRAF) RUPES project organized a one-day, post-project workshop titled, ‘Towards sustainable natural resources management through environmental services schemes that are fair and efficient’. The workshop was held on Wednesday, 18 January 2012, at Pangeran Beach Hotel, Padang, and was attended by around 60 people from central government ministries, provincial and local governments, private sector, environmental organizations, donor agencies, academe, local and international NGOs and students from local universities. The workshop examined a variety of research studies and results produced by ICRAF and its partners in West Sumatra, concerning environmental services schemes, including recommendations for further action.

The history of robusta coffee in Paninggahan is quite interesting to explore. Based on information obtained from the local community, the first coffee in Paninggahan was the Robusta species. The 1050 ha coffee enclave in Paninggahan, situated between 700 and 900 MASL on the northern hillsides of Lake Singkarak, used to be the most important Robusta coffee plantation in West Sumatra province. Nowadays, with world coffee prices at a high level the farmers of Paninggahan village wanted to revitalize the abandoned kopi ulu area through the Rewarding Upland Poor for the Environmental Services They Provide (RUPES) project. RUPES has operated in Singkarak, conducted by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), since 2004.
